Scrap Mechanic is an engineering game where you can create vehicles and structures in a sandbox environment. Unlike similar games such as Minecraft, you focus mainly on creating individual vehicles although you are able to place blocks on the ground to make simple structures. Using the simple tools and catalogue full of parts you can bash together everything from off road buggys to rockets.
The game is in Steam’s Early Access program and is so classed as an unfinished game. One of the main complaints about the game is that it gets weighed down by its own physics system. Players experience a big loss in their frame rate when the construct vehicles that are complicated. This reduction in FPS ruins the atmosphere inside the game and really puts a cap on how creative you can be.
Another popular complaint is that the game still has no survival mode or point to it. The developers are constantly promising that its coming soon and that they are working on it. In survival mode their will be aspects of the game that cause challenges to the player and so creates a point to the game. As soon as Scrap Mechanic gains this survival mode and dedicated servers the game could see a huge rush of new players.
The game saw some of its popularity thanks to the popular YouTube gaming channel Neebs gaming. They film videos where the stars of the show build incredible vehicles and try to outperform each other. Some episodes show them racing cars and some are more technical. Challenges like « create a refuse truck then pick up a dumpster and transport the contents to a rubbish tip » are great fun to watch.
The game has attracted a lot of big names who like to live stream their gameplay online for others to see. We discussed Neebs Gaming above but we have encountered other players who make amazing videos as well, they are:
A space based sandbox that is now complete with the addition of planets, Space Engineers shares a lot with Scrap Mechanic. Space Engineers also boasts a survival mode and dedicated servers so that you can host large multiplayer games smoothly. The sheer scale of Space Engineers is mind blowing, the universe that you can explore and build in is huge.
The game has an army of die hard players that continue to buck the trend and stick with it. Not many games come close to Space Engineers in terms of all round versatility and its definitely worth a try if you are a fan of the genre.
A newer contender to the sandbox survival genre is Hurtworld. This game chucks you into the wilderness of what looks like a cross between Australia and the United States. You are tasked with collecting resources and then crafting the means to survive. This can be in the form of shelter and/or equipment for defence such as tools and weapons.
Players are flocking to Hurtworld with each and every update to the game, it just keeps getting better for the players. If you enjoy crafting and are too inpatient to wait for the survival mode of Scrap Mechanic to be released then try this game out.
The king of craft and survive games, Minecraft is played by millions of people worldwide across a range of devices. In Minecraft you start with nothing and must collect resources in order to make more advanced tools to collect resources that are harder to acquire.
The online community for Minecraft is huge, made up of players, modders and artists. The game pulls in all sorts of people who look for all sorts of different things from the game. Some gamer’s enjoy the survival aspect where as some are pure creative mode. Minecraft allows the 2 types of players to come together and enjoy the game.
