Considering itself to be a massive online sandbox RPG, Citadel: Forged with Fire is a big game that wants to be the next Skyrim, except as an MMORPG. Currently available on Steam’s Early Access, all thanks to Blue Isle Studios and Virtual Basement; the game plays out as a FPS game, just with a lot more magic, dragons, and mythical creatures that you wouldn’t see in any-other genre. In the dangerous world of Ignus, you can tame mighty beasts and ride on them as mounts, forge alliances with many other players, and build great fortresses that are close to impenetrable. Although, in a world where magic is completely the norm that may not be as easy as one would hope!
From the looks of Citadel: Forged with Fire, you’ve got a sprawling fantasy world with plenty of gorgeous environments to explore and build within; quite similar to that of an Elder Scrolls game, but with more sandbox elements to make the game that much more intriguing. Everything you come across in this game will be destructible, especially if it’s player-built, leading to structures that might be a few fireballs away from toppling over.
With time, this game has slowly been improved over the last 6 months and only continues to grow with each passing day, creating an experience not many games have ventured into as of late. Ark: Survival Evolved is quite clearly an obvious inspiration for the game and it’s paid off, as you’ve got a fun and frantic magic-based sandbox game that’s unlike almost anything else out on the market as of right now, and that isn’t going to be changing any time soon by the sounds of things.
The game went from being seen as a genre smashing title but has gone downhill, here are the main points that need fixing:
A very similar game to Citadel: Forged with Fire is Dark & Light. Both focus around magic and crafting to survive game-play with an emphasis on forging alliances to succeed. If you love your survival games with a dark setting and a huge emphasis on casting magic spells then D&L is going to be right for you.
The 2 games have both got their criticisms which both seem to revolve around the fact that they are fairly new games. If the developers manage to fix the 2 games then we could see them both fighting for a share in the online magic and crafting genre of game world.
Another magic inspired title with private servers that was based on an MMO is Wurm Unlimited. This game has acquired an army of die hard fans who live for the title.
Wurm Unlimited has increased in positive sentiment from reviewers according to its official Steam page. Many of the negative reviews that were holding this game back have started turning the other way. The only remaining complaint that is seen now is that the game doesn’t work at all on some systems. If the developers can track this bug with the game and fix it then they could see the game gain some respect from the community.
