Contagion is a game developed by indie game developers Monochrome LLC. The game hit the Steam store in 2013 as an early release title and was later completed in 2014. The game had a lot of success with the indie community and established a large following. During its peak release the game had a solid 8000 players a day. Contagion has plummeted over the years only seeing around 80 – 100 players a day now. This is due to the fact that the game is over 5 years old now and many other zombie titles have since come out on PC.
Even though the game has now lost it’s fan base the game had a good lifespan and was a great game. The developers worked tireless on the game and funded much of it out of their own pocket. Although some later funds came from Kickstarter to help finish the project. Many say that this game was the successor to Zombie Panic, although some deny this notion. Arguing that Zombie Panic was it’s own game and deserves it’s own praise and identity.
The game itself has 3 different game modes in which players can choose to play. Hunted is the most played game mode on Contagion and the most notable out of the 3. Consisting of up to 16 players, Hunted is a free-for-all in which the last man standing wins, players have to fight against each other in this ultimate death-match. All players start as Humans and the first zombies are AI controlled. When you die you become a zombie and it is now your task to kill the remaining Human players. Even though you have lost the game as a human you still get points while playing as a zombie. Which makes this role as important as the human player. The aim of the game is to survive as long as possible and often causes a lot of fun and panic while playing.
The second game mode is ” Escape” and players must journey through a map with certain goals. This mode can hold up to 8 players. The main aim is to survive the whole campaign and reach the end of the level, although you will come across many challenges along the way. The final game mode is “Extraction” and is like “Escape” in regards to co-operative game play. The difference is you have to explore the map area and find captured AI players. The main aim is so save all survivors to complete the round. Although Contagion has 3 game modes most players tend to stick to the competitive Death-match, which even has its own Contagion server hosting which is available form the above hosts.
Monochrome have not released any new titles since this game but they are working on a VR version. The VR version doesn’t currently have a release date, but you can find out more on the Steam store. We would expect to hear more news on this soon, so continue to check back on the site for updates.
