The Ship was a mod for Half Life 2, released in 2004 and was later released as a standalone game in 2006 for Europe. It was later released in America and Australia in 2007 after growing demand for the game. It was also renamed to The ship: Murder Party when the game got on the steam store.
The game itself consists of a whole host of characters whom you may play as. The aim of the game is to assassinate a chosen target on the ship. This of course is easier said than done, as you must locate your target first. Once you have located your target you will have to try and kill them without anyone seeing you. This can often be difficult at times, because other players will also be hunting you. The game plays out in several rounds in multiplayer and will often end when time runs out. The game also has a solo campaign but it lacks depth and is often considered boring. So many players tend to stick to playing the online version, either over LAN or server.
The most notifiable feature about this game is the needs bar that each character has. Much like the idea of the Sims games, each character has 8 needs that need you will need to manage. These include Hunger, drinking, washing, socialising and sleeping. All play a vital role in how the game plays out. This is because it forces players to move around the ship, rather than hiding. Which also notifies players of the targets last known location. If certain needs are not met your character will fall asleep because of lack of sleep. Die of starvation or even dehydration, so be sure to keep an eye on these stats during the game.
A remastered version of the game came after the original developers disbanded. The game rights changed hands, with the new developers being Blazing Griffin. Who have never actually created any original games. But had planned to create the sequel to this game by asking for funding on Kickstarter. They fell short of their total goal of £128,000 and only raised £18,247. Which meant that the release of a second game called, The Ship: Full Steam Ahead never made production.
The Ship is no longer as popular as it was 10 years ago. There are still a few available hosts that offer The Ship server hosting, but the game is rather old. This means that many hosts will offer limited support on the game. There is still some support online through various forums and chat rooms that are active. The Steam community is also an amazing source for help when it comes to server hosting if you decide to run your own. Although the game has been re-released under the title of The Ship: Remasted. Though not as successful as the developers had hoped. The game did leave early access in 2016 and is available on the steam store.
