Unreal Tournament was released in 1999 and was considered one of the first and best FPS arena shooters of it’s time. It worked off the new Unreal engine that gave it the edge over its 2D gaming rivals of the time. Unreal Tournament has various different game modes including Last Man Standing, Team Deathmatch, Capture the flag, Deathmatch, Domination and Assault which can all be played online. With head to head being the core foundation of this game it’s still considered one of the greatest Arena FPS games of it’s time and people continue to play the classic Unreal Tournament in the 21st century. Servers are no longer online so you will need to use Unreal Tournament server hosting for a third party host in order to play this game online.
Following on from the massive success of Unreal Tournament (a game which rightly won many awards), Unreal Tournament 2003 greatly enhanced the franchise. The developers added a 3D rag-doll physics engine which made it a lot more interesting, especially when being killed.
This sequel saw many of the traditional weapons brought along with a few new additions and the characters had a revamp to bring them up to date. The enemy AI were also turned up a gear making them harder to kill and a lot more fun to play with.
As Unreal Tournament was a genre changing game you will find a lot of modern titles having similar elements. Here are our pick of the best similar games:
If you love a more organised experience than the one in Unreal Tournament then check out CS:GO. The Counter Strike series of games seem to be the next logical step in FPS progression as they contain many similar themes but feel a bit more grown up.
Instead of being about rushing and smashing your way to victory, CS:GO is more about teamwork and precise firing of weapons. You are also encouraged to engage in team based combat, imagine being in a swat team rather than a futuristic mock TV show about killing each other.
The game is still going strong with many players coming and going according to SteamCharts.
For a pure warfare experience check out Arma 3. In this game you get access to vehicles and other military equipment and set out to dominate a huge map against potentially hundreds of other players. Arma 3 is another more grown up game but that does seem to be how the online FPS genre has gone over the years.
Many people continue to play Arma 3 and you wont struggle to find a server to join with hundreds of other players already joined.
Probably the closest modern equivalent to Unreal Tournament is TF2. Valve have created a humours FPS with many different modes and potentially unlimited customise-ability with mods. The game continues to enjoy a massive player count with plenty of servers online for people to join according to SteamCharts.
The game has a certain charm not seen in other titles in this genre, maybe Left 4 Dead 2 comes close though. Strangely enough that is also another Valve creation, perhaps they have a good sense of humour over there.
