Considering itself to be a massive online sandbox RPG, Citadel: Forged with Fire is a big game that wants to be the next Skyrim, except as an MMORPG. Currently available on Steam’s Early Access, all thanks to Blue Isle Studios and Virtual Basement; the game plays out as a FPS game, just with a lot more magic, dragons, and mythical creatures that you wouldn’t see in any-other genre. In the dangerous world of Ignus, you can tame mighty beasts and ride on them as mounts, forge alliances with many other players, and build great fortresses that are close to impenetrable. Although, in a world where magic is completely the norm that may not be as easy as one would hope!

From the looks of Citadel: Forged with Fire, you’ve got a sprawling fantasy world with plenty of gorgeous environments to explore and build within; quite similar to that of an Elder Scrolls game, but with more sandbox elements to make the game that much more intriguing. Everything you come across in this game will be destructible, especially if it’s player-built, leading to structures that might be a few fireballs away from toppling over.

With time, this game has slowly been improved over the last 6 months and only continues to grow with each passing day, creating an experience not many games have ventured into as of late. Ark: Survival Evolved is quite clearly an obvious inspiration for the game and it’s paid off, as you’ve got a fun and frantic magic-based sandbox game that’s unlike almost anything else out on the market as of right now, and that isn’t going to be changing any time soon by the sounds of things.

Reasons the Game Is Failing

The game went from being seen as a genre smashing title but has gone downhill, here are the main points that need fixing:

  1. Buggy, the most prominent complaint seen on the official Steam reviews page for Citadel is that the developers don’t fix the major bugs fast enough
  2. The game is too early in its development cycle to be fully enjoyed, people are saying wait for it to be refined
  3. Not long enough, the game is said to keep you interested for several hours but then once you run out of new things to do it can get boring
  4. The player count has dropped off very quickly as seen here on SteamCharts. The current player count as of writing was only enough to fill a handful of servers worldwide, this speaks horrible things about the game

Similar Games

Dark & Light

A very similar game to Citadel: Forged with Fire is Dark & Light. Both focus around magic and crafting to survive game-play with an emphasis on forging alliances to succeed. If you love your survival games with a dark setting and a huge emphasis on casting magic spells then D&L is going to be right for you.

The 2 games have both got their criticisms which both seem to revolve around the fact that they are fairly new games. If the developers manage to fix the 2 games then we could see them both fighting for a share in the online magic and crafting genre of game world.

Wurm Unlimited

wurm unlimited server hostingAnother magic inspired title with private servers that was based on an MMO is Wurm Unlimited. This game has acquired an army of die hard fans who live for the title.

Wurm Unlimited has increased in positive sentiment from reviewers according to its official Steam page. Many of the negative reviews that were holding this game back have started turning the other way. The only remaining complaint that is seen now is that the game doesn’t work at all on some systems. If the developers can track this bug with the game and fix it then they could see the game gain some respect from the community.
