Picking The Right Minecraft Server Host

In this article I will be showing you what to look for when picking your Minecraft server host. Player slots and Ram aren’t the only thing you have check before buying. I’ll be listing them from 1-5 in no particular order.

  1. Server location. One of the most important aspects of your Minecraft server host is the location. If you and most of your players are in the US, you don’t want a EU server host, it will cause high ping times and overall lag.

2. Server backups. When your server crashes from that new plugin you got, and your players are yelling at you, you really just need a server backup from before the plugin ruined your world. So make sure you have some sort of backup system. You won’t need it often, but when you do, you’ll have a big smile on your face, knowing you saved yourself from 3 days of torture from players, while you remake your server.

3. Storage. What kind of storage is the host providing? SSD is much faster then HDD, but will come at a premium price. You should also check if the host has a limit on storage. (some will give you unlimited)

4. RAM and Player slots. when your looking for a server host, keep a eye on the RAM amount, not the player slots, as player slots are often not a good way of looking at how many players can play without lag. Often times, each player will need about 128Mb of RAM to play with no lag. So 1Gb could play 10, while 4Gb can play 40. (These numbers all depend on how many plugins you have. But 128Mb per player should be enough)

5. Support. When you are picking your host, make sure you look at the methods of support they give. Some companies will have a forum to give you support, and many posts go unanswered. While others have ticket systems, phone numbers to call and a live chat. For new server owners, a good support from your host can give you lots of valuable info.

I hope this article helped you pick your server host, and I wish you the best as you start your server. (or switch to a new host)
